The British, unlike our Australian and American counterparts, are modest to a fault and opt for self-deprecation over boastfulness and self-aggrandisement.

Embodied best by Hugh Grant in some of Britain’s most successful rom-coms our propensity to play down achievements draws admiration from many other countries.

We are the first to point out our own deficiencies, from a failure to deal with snow to our climate and yet we’re the last to highlight our great triumphs (unless you include this website of course).

But despite self-deprecation being so rife amongst Brits we’re not very good at it really!
