Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation

Our fantastic Queen celebrates 60 incredible years on the throne this weekend and rewatching the footage from the coronation one is reminded of what dedicated service the Queen has given to her country. It’s easy to forget that the Queen acceded to the throne in very sad circumstances; King George VI’s death on 6 February 1952 not only meant that the then, Princess Elizabeth, had lost her father but also at the same time, became Queen.

Thousands of people gathered to watch the procession all along the route, despite dreadful weather. The Queen on her coronation in 1953 broke new ground by broadcasting the ceremony on television.
