The pub

The Great British tradition of a pint at the pub, celebrated daily in TV soaps and comedies. A place for friends, company and a relaxing night away from the house, the pub can be a place to rest your weary head after a long country walk or simply your local hangout. It was formally known as a Public House, and has over the years become a fundamental part of British culture, I doubt many of us would know what to do without it! A typically British past time, the pub can actually be traced back to Roman times, however I doubt a lock-in existed then!

Mr.Men

Yes, the beloved children’s  books are still celebrated to this day following over 35 years of multiple books and cartoons. In February 2011 a film was even produced surrounding the Mr.Men characters. Legend has it that the idea first began when author Roger Hargreaves’ son Adam first asked ‘What does a tickle look like?’ resulting in the infamous and very first Mr.Men – Mr Tickle.

The books are loved not only by children but also by the adults reading the stories, and this is the reason why they are so popular to this day, across the world.

Great British Countryside

If there’s anything Britain can boast about, it’s our glorious countryside. Buckets of rain certainly contribute to our lush green Welsh valleys, our picturesque Scottish lochs and typically English rose gardens. With miles of protected woodland areas across the areas across the UK, it truly puts the beauty in Britain.

Toast

What better way to wake up than with a good old fashioned breakfast of a mug of tea and a slice of toast? Plain with butter or slathered with one of our lovely jams, toast is a guaranteed great start to the day.

James Bond

Fifty years of Bond charm has not slipped the mind of British people, and celebratory Martinis are flowing around the country to commemorate Bond’s 50th year. But whether you’re a Connery, Moore or Craig fan, there’s one thing that we can all agree on; Shaken, not stirred.

National treasure: Cilla Black

Cilla Black is an entertainer and most well known for her TV programme ‘Blind Date’ which lasted for 380 shows! However, before her career in presenting, Cilla was a singer and notched up 19 top 40 singles (including two number 1 hits!) and numerous sold out concerts around the world.

Cilla (born Priscilla Maria Veronica White) knew from a young age she wanted to be a part of the entertainment business, she was often found in ‘the clubs to be’ like The Cavern – where The Beatles performed!

She soon became a celebrity in her neighbourhood, even performing alongside The Beatles. Her stage name however was not so well planned, it came after a music paper misprinted her name and put Cilla Black instead of White, the name instantly stuck!

In 1999, Cilla was awarded an OBE for her successes in the entertainment industry. In 2013 Cilla will celebrate 50 years in the business, and she is still going strong! THIS is why she is our national treasure and why this month she features in our proud to be British moments.
